he Health Ministry announced Wednesday that although dew drinking water may be safe for human consumption, its health benefits are yet to be proven.
The statement came in response to a research finding that shows mechanically processed dew drinking water provided health benefits to mice.
“The benefits might not be the same for human beings,” Lucie Widowati of the Biomedical and Research Development Unit of the Health Ministry said during a medical seminar in Jakarta. “We must conduct clinical tests to prove this.”
The biomedical unit has been studying the benefits of dew drinking water in cooperation with PT Divine Eternair Water Indonesia (DEW).
“We conducted pre-clinical tests on animals before proceeding with the clinical tests,” Lucie said. “The company will proceed to the clinical tests to determine potential benefits for humans.”
PT DEW produces drinking water through the systemized dew process that extracts water from humidity in the air.
Because this water does not contain inorganic minerals (salt), metal (mercury) and compounds (pesticides) that may be harmful to health, it is believed to have potential benefits.
Tests on mice by the research unit indicate that regularly drinking dew water may lower cholesterol levels, aid in thinning blood, facilitate digestion and help with weight loss.
Andreanus Soemardji of the Bandung Institute of Technology said that dew water was not a health beverage, but ordinary drinking water, which has health benefits because it has no contaminants such as ground water.
“The systemized dew process won an innovation award from the US in 2005 for processing air humidity into drinking water,” said Anastasia Trianita of DEW Indonesia.
DEW claimed that the systemized dew process was also environmentally friendly because it did not damage the ozone layer, use excess energy or produce toxic waste.
