Fifty-one-year-old Peter Achim Ranz, alias Orobmann, may face 15 years in prison for allegedly possessing 6.7 grams of marijuana.
In an initial court session at Denpasar District Court presided over by Judge Nyoman Sutama on Thursday, prosecutor D. Rindayani charged the defendant under the 2009 Narcotics Law.
"We net the defendant under Article 13 of the law on trafficking and possessing narcotics," the prosecutor said.
Ranz was arrested at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban upon his arrival from Amsterdam from the KLM Royal Dutch airline on March 10. The airport's officer became suspicious when the German national looked confused.
He entered the body scanning device and the officer found that he had 6.7 grams of marijuana and an ecstasy pill in his pants.
The officer also asked him to undergo Ion scanning, which detected cocaine in his bag and on his hand.
Ranz later admitted that he had consumed cocaine a day before traveling to Bali. Lawyer Muhammad Husein, who said he would further study the prosecutor's demand, accompanied Ranz in the trial.
"We will proceed with the next court's session to hear testimonies from witnesses before making any decision," the lawyer said.
