Letter: Instigation to burn Ahmadi mosques

R

eferring to Ahmad Ghozali’s letter published in The Jakarta Post on June 14 under the heading “All the Muslims must be saved” in which he instigated burning Ahmadiyah Muslims’ mosques, considering Ahmadis non-Muslims. Allow me to share my views.

The concept of a subordinate prophet after Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a well-established fact since the times of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) based on the Holy Koran and the Hadith (the sayings of the Holy Prophet).

Even today, the majority of Muslims hold this belief. The largest Muslim organization in Indonesia confirmed this belief again, in 1927, in these words, “It is obligatory for us to believe that Nabi [Prophet] Isa  will descend again in the latter days as Nabi [Messenger] and Rasul [Prophet], who will serve the Syariat of Nabi Muhammad [peace be upon him]”.

The only difference between Ahmadi Muslims and other Muslims is that the latter believe that it will be the same Nabi Isa who came, around 2000 years ago, to the Jewish people. While the Ahmadi Muslims believe that Nabi Isa, the son of Mary, already passed away a long time ago (Koran 5:117-118).

Ahamadi Muslims believe that this subordinate prophet has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, whose purpose was to serve the Syariat of Islam. He is neither above nor equal to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Rather he is under the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as his servant.

This minute difference of understanding in no way could be called “cheating”, as Gozali describes it, and does not make Ahmadis automatically non-Muslims.

Because, according to the Prophet Muhammad, Islam is founded on these five pillars: There is one Allah and none is worthy of worship except Him and Muhammad is His prophet; saying (obligatory) prayers five times a day; going on the haj to Mecca (if able to do so) and fasting (in the fasting month).

All Ahmadis perform and believe wholeheartedly in the above-mentioned tenets thus are Muslims. Their mosques are always devoted to practicing the Islamic teachings, like the five-times-a-day prayers, Friday prayers, etc. So these mosques cannot be compared with the dihrar mosque, which was purposely built by those to conspire against Islam and invite foreign forces to attack Madina.
