AKARTA: It's not easy to hold championships without cigarette sponsors, a National Badminton Association (PBSI) representative says.
PBSI chief Yacob Rusdianto responded to comments from the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA), which criticized the Indonesian Open badminton championship from accepting sponsorship from Djarum, one of Indonesia's largest cigarette producers.
"This is a dilemma," told The Jakarta Post.
Government data shows the number of smokers between 15 and 19 increased 144 percent from 1995 to 2004, according to Komnas PA.
Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng said the state budget could not replace corporate sponsorship of athletic events. - JP
