AYAPURA: Papuan legislative councilors are planning to investigate allegations that US-based mining company PT Freeport has been mining uranium in Timika.
The councilors will cooperate with geologists from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University.
"We will begin the investigation early August. We will publicize our findings, whatever the results," Pikiran Rakyat faction head Yan Mandenas said in Jayapura on Friday.
PT Freeport has been producing uranium for eight months according to publicly-available information sources, Yan said.
He added that analysis by geologists previously revealed potential uranium deposits at the Papuan mining site.
Freeport spokesman Budiman Moerdijat denied the allegations. - JP
