Fire razes 200 houses in West Jakarta

JAKARTA: A blaze gutted 200 houses in Tambora, West Jakarta, on Sunday morning.

No fatalities or injuries were reported in the inferno.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, with leading assumptions pointing to faulty wiring, kompas.com reported.

"We have managed to extinguish the fire. We deployed 28 fire trucks from West, Central and North Jakarta," operation chief at the West Jakarta fire and disaster management department, Endang Hairudin said Sunday.

Fires frequently break out in densely populated Tambora with 19 instances since January and at an average of one case a month.

Later on the same day, another fire gutted a motorcycle workshop in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.

A firefighter told detik.com the fire started at 4 p.m.

"We sent 10 fire trucks to the area," he said. - JP
