IAU: Residents of Tunjung Sari village in the Riau regency of Indragiri Hulu have been living in fear over the last two months as a Sumatran tiger and a bear have roamed their village and preyed on their cattle.
One resident, Tohbasir, said villagers had put a curfew in place after dusk, fearing possible attacks.
“No one dares to leave home. The bear has tried to enter peoples’ houses,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The animals had mauled not only cattle but also pets, including dogs.
Forest rangers would be sent to drive the tiger and bear back to their habitat in Kerumutan Conservatory, Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center chief Trisunu Danis Woro said.
He added the animals’ incursion was a result of logging and forest clearing by an industrial forestry company. — JP
