Cops, businessman and civil servant tried for terrorism

T

wo police officers, a businessman and a civil servant were charged Thursday for their alleged involvement in a recently uncovered military style terrorist training camp in Aceh.

They face charges ranging from planning attacks to supplying firearms to a terrorist organization, which carry a maximum penalty of death.

The police officers were First Brig. Tatang Mulyadi and First Brig. Abdi Tunggal Bin Adam. They were tried at the East Jakarta District Court. Also standing trial separately was businessman Ahmad Sutrisno, an alleged middleman who connected the two officers with terror suspect, Sofyan Tsauri, a former police officer.

Prosecutor Muhammad Nasir said police arrested the three in March this year following Tsauri’s arrest in Cimanggis, just south of Jakarta, several days prior.

The prosecutors charged that the three had provided firearms to the Aceh paramilitary training camp up until January.

“The defendants violated the Anti Terror Law, the Firearm Possession Law and the Criminal Code,” Prosecutor Muhammad Nasir told the hearing session.

If proven guilty, Tatang, Abdi and Sutrisno, who are currently being held at the Jakarta Police detention center, could be jailed for life.

Nasir said, the officers’ involvement began when Tatang, who was formerly a registration officer at the National Police logistic warehouse at the National Police logistics office in East Jakarta, was asked by Sutrisno to procure an assortment of firearms.

Prosecutor Nasir said Sutrisno began ordering firearms and ammunition from Tatang last June.

He said that, according to Sutrisno’s testimony, the orders were to meet requests made by Sofyan Tsauri, who was later found to be one of the trainers at a terrorist camp in Jantho, Aceh.

Tatang then asked for Abdi’s assistance in providing firearms. Abdi worked with Tatang as a registration officer.

In total, both Tatang and Abdi sold 28 firearms of various types and 19,999 rounds of ammunition to Tsauri through Sutrisno.

Tsauri is alleged to have spent approximately Rp 190 million procuring the arsenal.

Both Tatang and Abdi refused to comment at the hearing.

The panel of judges at both trials agreed to postpone the trials until Sep. 21 before hearing the defense attorneys’ response to the indictments facing their clients.

In West Jakarta District Court, Yudi Zulfahri was indicted with planning and organizing the military training camp. Prosecutor Laksmi Indriyah said the police had managed to gather convincing evidence unveiling the significant role Yudi played in organizing the Aceh terrorist training camps.

“The defendant violated the Anti-Terror Law and the Firearm Possession Law and faces life in prison,” prosecutor Laksmi said.

According to the testimony of Ubaid, another terror suspect currently on trial, Yudi headed the al Qaeda-linked terrorist group based in Aceh.

The West Jakarta District Court is handling the trial of 102 terror suspects rounded up in the Aceh military training camp. They have been charged with terrorism and gun possession and face sentences ranging from six years in prison to the death penalty if found guilty.
