DENPASAR: Denpasar municipality has allocated Rp 400 million to provide local farmers with subsidized organic fertilizer for 1,200 hectares of rice fields
ENPASAR: Denpasar municipality has allocated Rp 400 million to provide local farmers with subsidized organic fertilizer for 1,200 hectares of rice fields.
Denpasar Agriculture Agency head Gede Ambara said 30 percent of the municipality’s 2,700 hectares of rice fields had already been developed as organic farms. With the subsidy, the agency expects to increase the area of organic rice fields to 40 percent.
Ambara said the fund was taken from the local budget.
In 2009, Denpasar produced 32,000 tons of rice. The muni-cipality has set a target to increase the yield by 5 percent, as the city consumed 75,000 tons of rice annually.
“The supply shortfall means we have to procure rice from other regencies,” Ambara said. — JP
