ENPASAR: Two deadly diseases are endemic on the resort island of Bali, and are being exacerbated by extreme weather and a shortage of medicine.
I Nyoman Suteja, head of the Bali Health Agency, said rabies and dengue fever were among the most serious health threats on the island.
Rabies has killed around 100 people so far this year, while the number of dengue cases has doubled in the same period.
“Within only one week, five persons have died from rabies. Only one of the five victims received the anti-rabies vaccination, but it was too late,” Sutedja said.
There have been 65,000 incidents of dogs biting humans in Bali in the last two years. — JP
