AKARTA: Dozens of members of a workers forum interest group staged protests in front of City Hall and the City Council building, demanding that the provincial minimum wage be increased 25 percent to Rp 1.4 million (US$156) a month.
Forum coordinator Herry Hermawan said the capital city of Jakarta should become a benchmark for development in the country. Providing a decent wage, he said, was the responsibility of business and the government.
“The minimum wage should take the side of the workers, not create losses for us,” he said.
City Secretary Fajar Pandjaitan said the latest meeting between representatives of businesses and workers on the salary board produced a plan for a 7 percent increase in 2011.
“It’s not final yet as we haven’t finished coordinating,” Fajar said.
He said the protesting workers should convey their wishes to their representatives on the salary board.
“I hope the workers can work wholeheartedly,” he added.
The provincial minimum wage has increased annually, from Rp 900,560 in 2007 to Rp 1.069 million in 2009. — JP
