Mandiri allocates Rp 2.3b for disasters victims

J

AKARTA: Bank Mandiri, the nation’s largest bank by assets, has allocated Rp 2.3 billion (US$257,600) in donations for victims of the Mount Merapi eruptions, the Mentawai tsunami and the Wasior flash flood, the lender said in a statement issued Sunday.

Rp 1 billion will be donated to victims of the tsunami in Mentawai, West Sumatra, and Rp 500 million for Wasior flash flood victims in West Papua, the bank said. The remaining Rp 800 million has been allocated for Mount Merapi victims and was handed over to the Indonesian red cross and the Sleman municipality on Sunday, it said.

“The donations might not fulfill all of the victims’ needs. But we do hope that our contribution will ease the people’s difficulties,” said Pahala Mansury, Mandiri’s chief financial officer. As reported earlier, state-run Bank Negara Indonesia has allocated a total of Rp 1.63 billion, the lender said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post. According to the statement, Rp 625 million has been distributed to Wasior, Rp 500 million to Mentawai and the remaining Rp 500 million to Merapi. — JP
