elbourne four-man-band The Temper Trap has included Indonesia on its world tour and will be belting out its pulsating rhythms in Jakarta this Friday.

The band whose atmospheric anthem Sweet Disposition is listed in BBC’s Sound of 2009 and is one of the soundtracks of romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer will perform at the 3,500-capacity Istora Senayan stadium, giving way to the soaring vocals of Manado-born frontman Dougy Mandagi and the band’s crescendos.

The Temper Trap, consisting of Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne on bass, Lorenzo Sillitto on guitar and Toby Dundas on drums and percussion, is scheduled to play in two other cities in Indonesia; Denpasar, Bali, being the band’s first city, and Bandung on Saturday.

Ismaya Live music promoter Kay Tadjoedin said 70 percent tickets for the Jakarta show had already been sold.

The band made their global breakthrough in 2009 after they released their debut album Conditions, two years after they released their EP in Australia.

The band said 2009 had been an amazing year. The foursome recorded Conditions with producer Jim Abbis who was behind the debut albums of Arctic Monkeys and Adele.

The Temper Trap moved to London that year and began to build their UK fan base.

“We can’t complain. We’ve gone to see the world, and got paid to do it — in our luxurious bus,” Mandagi told the BBC.

This year the quartet won two ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards for Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for Sweet Disposition.

Friday’s lineup seems to promise a memorable musical experience for Jakartans, as they will also get to see UK’s one-man-band James Yuill — who mixes emotional songwriting and acoustic guitar with visceral beats and dynamic rhythms — and Indonesia’s indie virtuoso Efek Rumah Kaca.

Kay said Ismaya Live chose a line up that represented idealism in music.

“A lot of bands only think about making money. These musicians are idealists,” she said.

Kay also said that Friday would also be a comeback for Efek Rumah Kaca.

“They have been absent for a while because one of the members was ill. We invited them to perform and they agreed. So this will also be a sort of comeback for Efek Rumah Kaca,” she said.

The last album from Efek Rumah Kaca was Kamar Gelap (Dark Room) in 2008. The trio was hailed by one local publication as the “savior” of Indonesian music. Their songs cover a wide range of issues from politics, human rights, to environment and pop culture — a refreshing change amid a plethora of Indonesian bands playing sappy love songs.

Yuill meanwhile is also a unique performer, who combine the sensibility of Nick Drake with the beats of Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twins. After his Turning Down Water for Airs album release in 2008, his presence in London’s “folktronica” continued to grow.

“Yuill is very unique because he’s a one man band. He’s on his own — playing all the instruments alone,” Kay said.

Tickets costs Rp 300,000 for tribune seats and Rp 350,000 for festival seats.
