Former Gayus judges deny bribery allegations

T

wo former judges in charge of an embezzlement case implicating Gayus H. Tambunan —Haran Tarigan and Bambang Widiatmoko — told the South Jakarta District Court that they did not receive bribes from Gayus during
the case examination process.

Haran and Bambang were summoned as witnesses at the trial of Gayus’ former lawyer, Haposan Hutagalung.

“I received no bribe, neither before nor during the hearing process,”Bambang said, as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

When asked how Gayus could escape punishment at that time, Bambang said it was solely because both evidence and witnesses presented before the court had failed to convince the panel of judges.

Both judges were interrogated after their colleague, Muhtadi Asnun, was detained over bribery charges. Muhtadi, also a presiding judge, was accused of receiving US$40,000 in bribes from Gayus. Muhtadi is now being tried at the East Jakarta District Court.
