Comment: Sex, money, morality: Business as usual

D

ec. 6, p. 7

Sex sells. Nobody knows that better than prostitutes, or “sex workers”, as the politically correct call them these days. But you can only sell if there are buyers: supply and demand, the simple logic of our capitalist world.

In a recently published book, Jakarta Uncovered: Exposing Immorality, Building a New Consciousness, Nori Andriyani — feminist and NGO activist, lecturer and former journalist — questions why it is always the woman, the sex worker, who is blamed for the oldest profession’s activities? (By Julia Suryakusuma, Jakarta)

Your comments:

For the record: Regulation of the sex industry does work. I cite Amsterdam, and, closer to home, Bangkok, as examples.

The question you have to ask is do you want Indonesia to become like that?
It seems at odds with both our laws and shared religious values. Of course the latter is a bit of hypocrisy considering the number of married men who use prostitutes or “happy-ending” massage parlors.

I agree women should be free to sell their product but legalizing this would in the majority of cases lead to further oppression and control both sexual and economic and most probably by men.
