PLN adds 1,600 MW for Greater Jakarta

A

n additional power supply of 1,600 megawatts is now available for industrial and business customers in the Greater Jakarta area following the recent operation of several major plants in Java.

With the additional supply state electricity utility PLN can provide new connections to business
and industrial customers in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Gunung Putri, Karawang and North Banten.

With the increase in the power supply, PLN would be able to significantly reduce the number of applicants, especially business and industrial companies, on the waiting list, PLN president director Dahlan Iskan said Wednesday.

“We have given close attention to the power needs of our industrial sector,” he said at the official launching of the new connections held at the Jakarta International Exhibition Center in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

Indonesia’s economy would not grow as strong as expected if the industrial sector did not receive sufficient power supply to operate or expand their businesses, he said, adding that with stronger industrial growth would help the country’s efforts to decrease unemployment.

The additional power supply would provide connections to 2,250 new business customers in Greater Jakarta. The company promises that other firms on its waiting list will get new connections or additional capacity in March 2011.

A similar program would be launched in Central Java and East Java next year, Dahlan said.

“For Central Java and East Java we expect that we can provide new connections in May 2011,” he said, adding that the new connections in the two provinces would need about 1,000 megawatts in additional
supply.

The new connections in the two provinces would not only serve industrial consumers, but also household customers.

PLN has planned to install five new transformers to improve the security of electricity supply for Java and Bali.

Two transformers have already been installed in Bekasi and Gandul. Three more transformers will be installed in Cibatu, West Java, Cilegon, Banten and Kembangan in West Jakarta municipality.

The operation of new transformers has become one of PLN’s programs to prevent blackouts that often hit Jakarta and surrounding areas. A series of blackouts hit the city early this year due to transformer explosions at the Kembangan and Muara Karang power distribution centers.

PLN said that the company would have 1,130 megawatts of additional capacity for the Java and Bali
grids by the end of this year with the operation of three new power stations in Indramayu in West Java, Labuan in Banten and Muara Karang in North Jakarta. The new power plants are being constructed under the 10,000 megawatt fast-track program.

PLN plans to add 4,710 megawatt under the same program for the Java and Bali grids next year. To support the power distribution, the company says that it will establish 5,407 distribution stations across the two islands. Five new transformers with a total capacity of 2,500 mega volt ampere will also be installed for support.

Poor electricity infrastructure has long been a major stumbling block for Indonesia’s efforts to attract foreign investors.
