New rice strain allows more harvests

ARABAHAN: For the last six years, Barito Kuala regency in South Kalimantan has been working with the Bogor Institute of Agriculture to crossbreed local rice varieties with advanced varieties. As a result, one of four pedigrees has been acknowledged by the Agriculture Ministry.

Regent Hasanuddin Murad said the pedigree, dubbed IPB2 Batola, was now being tested in Dandan Jaya, Rantau Berau district, on 8 hectares of land.

Hasanuddin said the new variety had several advantages, such as a shorter planting period of four months compared to local rice varieties that require eight months.

Besides a shorter planting period, the new variety also produces more rice, with 5 tons of dried husks per hectare compared to the 3.4 tons of dried husks with the local rice.

“The rice seeds will be distributed to farmers for the October planting season,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

He said he hoped farmers would be able to make more money, as the new rice would allow for two harvests a year. — JP
