akarta expects up to a 10 percent increase in the amount of garbage during Ramadhan, the city sanitation agency said.
City Sanitation Agency head Eko Bharuna said that during the fasting month Jakarta expects to see 650 tons more garbage per day on top the regular daily amount of 6,500 tons.
To deal with the excess, Eko said the Agency ordered staff to work overtime to send garbage to the final dumping sites.
He said that the agency also wanted private operators to work harder to handle 60 percent of the city’s expected waste.
Garbage should be collected by garbage trucks on a daily basis, but the limited fleet had hampered the process for speedy delivery of waste to final dumping sites, he said.
The amount of garbage, however, is expected to decrease during the Idul Fitri holiday. The Jakarta Sanitation Agency now only has 1,050 vehicles, or half of the ideal fleet of 2,100 garbage trucks.
