AKARTA: The Jakarta Police have arrested dozens of street thugs during an operation code-named Kilat Jaya, aimed at reducing crime rates during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Jakarta Police chief of operations, Sr. Comr. Sujarno, said on Monday that between Aug. 2 and Aug. 5, police arrested 218 street thugs and resolved 113 street crime cases.

“Of the suspects, we have targeted 14 of them. As for the rest, 71 suspects have been detained and 133 are under our surveillance program,” he said.

Sujarno said that of the 113 street crime cases, Jakarta Police initially targeted to resolve 13 cases.

He said police are still waiting for the full results from the completed operation, which will continue until Aug. 14.

Meanwhile, in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, West Java, four robbers shot a delivery person and made off with Rp 300 million in cash.

The delivery person, identified as Ai, was delivering money from a gas station to be deposited at a branch of Bank Mandiri, in the Gran Wisata housing complex. Ai sustained gunshot wounds to his right thigh when trying to prevent the theft.

Ai was then taken to the Hermina hospital. The case is still under investigation by the Bekasi Police.
