OLITOLI: The Central Sulawesi administration has formed a team to curb pest damage to rice fields, according to a government official.
“The team includes the farmers who have received counseling from agricultural officials,” Agriculture and Horticulture Agency head Mohammad Nur Munawarah said on Thursday.
The team was formed after harvests failed in hundreds of hectares of rice fields due to pests.
“Mostly caterpillars and pests attacked the rice fields,” Nur said.
The pests caused crops to dwindle from the usual 1-hectare yield of 2,400 tons of husked rice field to only 1 ton.
Despite the failed crops, the Central Sulawesi Statistics Bureau projected rice production this year to surpass 1 million tons, up by 90,000 tons from last year.
