AKARTA: A government taskforce on Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) says that 218 laborers are facing capital punishment abroad, of which 152 are in Malaysia, 43 in Saudi Arabia, and 33 in China.
Some have been convicted and sentenced to death, including five migrant workers in Saudi Arabia and nine in China. Others are still standing trial on charges that carry the death penalty.
Priyo Budi Santoso mentioned that around 51 out of the 151 TKI facing capital punishment in Malaysia were at the stage of their first trials.
He demanded the government immediately form a team of lawyers to provide legal assistance for Indonesian migrant workers.
“We encourage the government to propose a budget for that purpose, and the House will definitely pass it,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that House members would request China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia to release the workers detained in their countries during a meeting of lawmakers from ASEAN countries, due to take place in Syria in December this year, and also at a conference for Islamic organizations, to be held in January 2012.
