AKARTA: A nongovernmental organization has distributed 15,000 free condoms to people at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, in Bekasi and Karawang, West Java.
A. Hazami S, program director of Mitra Sehati, which assists people living with HIV/AIDS, said on Friday that his foundation had targeted sex workers, drug users, transsexuals, homosexuals, truck drivers and factory workers.
“We hope the condoms will slow the spread of HIV/AIDS,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Hazami said that the condoms would be handed out in areas where HIV/AIDS was prevalent. The foundation said that Bekasi alone had 24 epidemic areas, including Cibitung, which had four red light districts. However, 11 areas were still untouched.
“In each area, we have been dispatching around 2,000 condoms monthly. So far, all of them are well distributed,” he said.
Hamzani said that the condoms were a donation from Geneva-based Global Fund donor body through its AIDS prevention committee.
