Councillor handed four years for corruption

ALEMBANG: The Sekayu District Court in South Sumatra sentenced Musi Banyuasin regional councillor from the Gerindra faction, Emil Silfan bin M. Roni, to four years’ imprisonment on Thursday for graft.

The verdict was lighter than the five-year term sought by prosecutors.

The judges found Emil guilty of violating the 2001 Corruption Law.

“The defendant is also fined with Rp 200 million [US$23,500],” said presiding judge Rahmat Sanjaya.

Emil’s lawyer Grees Selly said her client would file an appeal against the ruling. The defendant left the courtroom immediately after the session ended, accompanied by his lawyer, with a city arrest imposed against him but no immediate incarceration.

Emil was found guilty of accepting bribes and committing fraud in relation to the procurement of free land ownership titles from the National Land Agency (BPN) in February 2008.

At that time, the BPN provided free land ownership titles in two districts — Sungai Lilin and Bayung Lencir. Emil himself operated in Pinang Banjar village in the Sungai Lilin district.

The defendant had collected hundreds of residents in the Pinang Banjar village wishing to apply for the land titles.
