AKARTA: BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) says that it will cooperate with the authorities in investigating the recent chaos during a smartphone sales promotion at Pacific Place shopping mall, South Jakarta, when dozens of customers were injured.

The incident also led to two police officers, Comr. Hando and Kebayoran Baru Police intelligence unit chief, identified only as S., being removed from their posts due to negligence. Hundreds of smartphone enthusiasts queued up from the night before to buy the latest BlackBerry Bellagio which was selling for only Rp 2.3 million (US$255.3) , a 50 percent reduction from its original market price of Rp 4.6 million, last week.

It was the first occasion for BlackBerry, which does not have a manufacturer here, to release its Bellagio smartphone on to the Indonesian market.

“RIM is actively cooperating with the authorities who are investigating this incident. We are also undertaking our own investigation to prevent any reoccurrence of this sort of situation,” RIM Asia Pacific managing director Gregory Wade told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
