Apriyani case handed to prosecutors

J

akarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Thursday that the police had handed over the case files of four suspects of last month’s horrific car crash in Gambir, Central Jakarta, to the city’s prosecutor office.

“Only the drug abuse case files were handed over. The traffic accident case files are still being compiled as the investigation is still ongoing,” Rikwanto said.

If the prosecutors find the case files complete, the case will soon be submitted to court for trial.

The four suspects, comprising driver Apriyani Susanti and passengers Denny Mulyana, Arisandi and Adistina Putri, have been charged under the 2009 Narcotics Law for illegal drugs possession and drug abuse.

They may have to face between four and 12 years imprisonment, as well as between Rp 800 million (US$89,600) and Rp 8 billion in fines if found guilty.

The case files hand over was made after the four suspects underwent a week-long health check that included a thorough physical check-up, a personality test and an interview with psychiatrists at the police’s narcotics directorate.

A joint team of 14 doctors from the police, the National Narcotics Agency and the Drug Dependence Hospital conducted the test.

Rikwanto said that the health test results would only be revealed in court.

The four suspects had also undergone case reconstructions at the nightclub Stadium, in Jl. Hayam Wuruk, West Jakarta, on Tuesday, and at Café Upstairs in Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The four allegedly drunk bottles of beer and whisky at Café Upstairs then bought and consumed ecstasy pills at Stadium the night before the incident.

Apart from the narcotics charge, Apriyani has also been charged under the 2009 Traffic Law for reckless driving resulting in death, driving without a valid license and registration, and speeding.

She was driving a black Daihatsu Xenia at 11 a.m. on Jan. 22 when she swerved off Jl. M.I. Ridwan Rais in front of the Trade Ministry building and plowed into 13 pedestrians, killing nine and injuring four.

She may face up to six years in prison or up to Rp 12 million in fines if found guilty.

The police have also charged her under the Criminal Code for murder, which brings a penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment. (mim)
