Looking for all the good Indonesian films? This month, Kineforum invites movie enthusiasts to celebrate National Film Month, which the non profit movie theater has held for six years running. Held from March 15 to 31 at the Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Cikini, Central Jakarta, this year’s celebration is themed “Sejarah Adalah Sekarang” (History Is Now). Other than presenting classic and rare Indonesian movies, both old and new, Kineforum plans to screen hard-to-find films from the 1970s and 1980s from the late master director Sjuman Djaya, an exhibition of Indonesian film posters, several open lectures and a closing-night concert. Films on offer also include Edwin’s Kebun Binatang (Postcards from The Zoo), which was in competition in Berlin this year, and several of his shorts, including Trip to the Wound (2005) and his documentary Nairobi Notes (2010). For more information on the films and a program schedule, visit kineforum.wordpress.com and kineforum.org.

Music

After all these years, the American funk band still keeps it real for its ardent fans. Earth Wind & Fire will play at the Tennis Indoor Senayan in Jakarta on March 28. Led by Maurice White, the band, formed in 1969, elbowed their way to fame in the 1970s with hits such as “After the Love Has Gone”, “September”, “Reasons”, “Fantasy” and “Shining Star”. The 6-time Grammy winners received the Daniel L. Stephenson Humanitarian Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music at the 15th Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival in 2009.

Performance

People may be unfamiliar with wayang beber, as the tradition has almost vanished. However, the art of storytelling with picture scrolls lives on in Pacitan, East Java, and Gunung Kidul, Central Java. Bentara Budaya Jakarta will highlight this hard-to-experience art form with an exhibition titled Dolanan Wayang Beber (Playing Wayang Beber) from March 22 to 29. Visitors can watch a Pacitan wayang beber on March 21 and marvel as renowned dalang (puppet master) Rudi Prasetyo performs accompanied by a live traditional music ensemble.
