Police to map disputed W. Jakarta land plots

P

olice said on Monday that they were currently mapping all disputed plots of land in West Jakarta on the heels of a violent gangland brawl connected to land ownership in the municipality’s Cengkareng district on Wednesday.

“We will map all disputed land in West Jakarta and will call all business owners who lay claim to the land and are involved in disputes,” West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Suntana announced.

Suntana said there were dozens of disputed plots of empty land in West Jakarta, most of which were located in Cengkareng, Kalideres and Kembangan districts and along Jl. Daan Mogot.

Suntana said the police would bring members of groups guarding the land under control.

“We have held a discussion with members of mass organizations as well as thugs to avoid incidents like the Cengkareng brawl from happening in the future,” he said.

“The land owners should have looked for formal security services instead of resorting to using the services of those men.”

On Aug. 29, the police deployed 300 officers to end a violent brawl over a 2.1-hectare plot of land between members of rival gangs led by former crime lord Hercules Rozario Marshal and murder suspect John Kei. One man was shot dead, another was critically injured and 99 were named suspects in the brawl.

A subsequent police investigation found that a company had hired John’s gang to guard 1.4 hectares of the land, while another company had hired a group of Hercules’ men to protect the remaining 0.7 hectares. John’s men reportedly laid claim to the smaller plot of land, inciting conflict with Hercules’ men.

Separately, police mobile detective chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Heriawan said the police had detained Djamal Koedoeboen, John Kei’s lawyer and prominent member of the Kei gang, for allegedly ordering an attack on a house in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

“We put Djamaludin behind bars around one week before the Idul Fitri holiday. He is now a suspect,” he said.

Djamal and two other men were arrested and have been charged under the Criminal Code with breaking and entering, forceful assault and unpleasant conduct. They could face up to five-and-a-half years in jail if found guilty.
