P

ublicly listed construction company PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) has pocketed new contracts worth up to Rp 10 trillion (US$1 billion) as of the end of August and is expecting to win more tenders, particularly from Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) projects in Jakarta.

WIKA’s corporate secretary, Natal Argawan, said the new contracts, which fulfill around 60 percent of the company’s full year target of Rp 16.52 trillion, came from various firms, including state-owned enterprises and private companies.

Natal said the company expected to close the third quarter with Rp 11 trillion worth of new contracts.

The company’s new contracts cover various infrastructure projects. Among the large projects are the development of steam gas power plant (PLTGU) Tanjung Batu in East Kalimantan worth Rp 530 billion; four stages of the development of bridges and railways in Central Java worth Rp 285 billion; the construction of the Sabo dam in Yogyakarta worth Rp 240 billion; a procurement project and installation work for PT Aneka Tambang’s ferronickel factory expansion worth Rp 323.2 billion; and the development of Batu Ampar port in Batam worth Rp 349.9 billion.

Natal said his company was awaiting the results of its bid on the first phase of development for the MRT projects. The Jakarta administration said it would announce the winner of the tender on Tuesday. However, it postponed the announcement as the capital city prepared for the gubernatorial runoff poll on Thursday.

According to Natal, WIKA’s consortiums have submitted bids for five of six projects in the first-phase. “We submitted bids for three elevated projects and two for underground projects,” Natal said.

According to Natal, WIKA established a consortium with Tokyu Corp. for the tender of the elevated projects. WIKA and Tokyu hold 40 percent and 60 percent stakes in the consortium, respectively.

Meanwhile, for the underground projects, the company formed another consortium with two Japanese companies, the Obayashi Corporation and the Shimizu Corporation, as well as local partner, PT Jaya Konstruksi Manggala Pratama. In this consortium, the Japanese companies hold a total of 70 percent while WIKA and Jaya own 15 percent stakes each.

WIKA has also collaborated with Mitsubishi Construction Co. Ltd., in which the two companies’ subsidiaries have established a joint venture called PT Wika Kobe, which will build a concrete plant to supply material for the MRT development.

In the first phase of the MRT’s development, a line of 15 kilometers will be built from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. The first phase of development is estimated to cost around Rp 16 trillion.
