strong>DENPASAR: An escaped drug suspect turned himself into police in Kuta on Tuesday because he could no longer bear to be away from the peaceful atmosphere of Bali, which he had not found anywhere else while he had been on the run for a year, police said Thursday.

Muhamad Rawi and another five drug suspects escaped from the Kuta police precinct detention house on Sept. 15, 2011. The five other suspects were recaptured when they were about to board a ferry to Java from Gilimanuk port inwestern Bali.

Police said Rawi, who hails from the East Java coastal town of Banyuwangi, kept moving while he was on the run to avoid police. He worked as a food hawker in Jakarta, then he went into hiding in North Sumatra before he realized that life was wonderful in the Kuta detention cell.

He called police in Kuta, telling them that he had become aware that nothing was more miserable than life on the lam. He wants to go back to school after serving his time in prison.

“So he is back in our dungeon,” Kuta Police precinct chief Comr. Gede Putu Dedi Ujiana said as quoted by detik.com.
