strong>PEKANBARU: Prosecutors at the Pekanbaru Corruption Court demanded on Monday a six-year prison sentence for former Kampar regent Burhanuddin Hussein for wrongfully issuing a logging license in Siak and Pelalawan regencies when he headed the Riau Forestry Office. Prosecutor head M. Roem said Burhanuddin had violated Law No. 31/1999 on corruption eradication and the Criminal Code on corruption.
“He enriched himself and a corporation and caused losses to the state,” Roem said. The defendant, he added, should be fined Rp 250 million (US$26,096), or serve another five months in prison.
Burhanuddin’s case is connected to a graft case involving Siak regent Arwin AS and former Pelalawan regent T. Azmun Jaafar, who have been sentenced to four years and 11 years respectively for accepting bribes for the issuance of the logging permit.
Roem said Burhanuddin had abused his power when in office from 2005 to 2006 for approving the annual working plan for 12 industrial forest companies that wrongfully received permits from Arwin and Azmun.
