ALATIGA: John Manoppo, former mayor of Salatiga in Central Java, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of involvement in a fraud case related to a road construction project in 2008.
Central Java Police criminal division unit head Sr. Comr. Mas Guntur Laope is quoted by tribunnews.com saying that John is believed to have appointed PT Kuntjup as contractor without examining the value of the project.
PT Kuntjup, owned by former Salatiga councilor Titik Kirnaningsih, tendered a bid of Rp 49 billion (US$5.09 million) for the project, higher than other contractors that offered Rp 42 billion.
Last month, Semarang Corruption Court sentenced Titik to five years behind bars for causing state losses of Rp 12.23 billion from the construction of 6.5 kilometers of the Salatiga southern ring road. Her company was guilty of marking up the cost of the poorly constructed road.
