ommy Sugiarto became the only Indonesian shuttler to survive an onslaught after defeating Marc Zwiebler of Germany to advance to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open badminton tournament on Friday.

Tommy was taken to three games in his 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 win over his opponent, according to tournamentsoftware.com. He will face Chen Long in the semi-finals, and if wins that, he will face either Lee Chong Wei or Kenichi Tago in the final.

Friday’s match program saw more Indonesian players crashing out, with Adrianti Firdasari being the last to collapse. She went down to Wang Lin 21-12, 21-19 for her fourth loss in as many matches against the Chinese.

Mixed doubles pairs Fran Kurniawan/Shendy Puspa Irawati and Riky Widianto/Puspita Richi Dili were the last to exit the tournament after losing to their respective opponents.

Fran/Shendy provided tough opposition but only in their opening game, before losing 23-21, 21-8 to Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christina Pedersen of Denmark. Riky/Puspita followed them with a 21-18, 21-12 defeat by Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei.

Indonesia had no remaining contenders in the men’s doubles after Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan succumbed to the Chinese second seeds, Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng, who won 21-17, 21-15.
