Weather delays recovery of dead in W. Sumatra

H

eavy rains are hampering efforts to find the bodies of those killed in a landslide in Tanjung Raya in Agam, West Sumatra.

On Tuesday morning, searchers recovered the body of Rosmi, 75; the 15th confirmed death as a result of the calamity. Officials called off the search after heavy downpour began around 11 a.m.

Thirteen of the deceased victims have been buried in Agam and two in North Sumatra. West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) operations chief Ade Edward said the search for victims would continue until Feb. 2.

Dodi Ruswandi, deputy of the emergency division at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the agency would give affected families Rp 25 million to build new houses.

“There is one condition: They must be willing to be relocated to a new area,” Dodi said.

The agency planned to relocate landslide victims to safer locations, such as Tanjung Mutiara, to avoid landslides in the future.
