Comments: Durian import moratorium

F

strong>Feb. 11, p. 14

Senior officials at the Trade and Agriculture ministries will meet to discuss protests raised by the
government’s recent decision to suspend imports of certain fruit and vegetables, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan says.

Officials will address the issue in partnership with a Thai counterparts following protests from Thai durian exporter who claims to be suffering significant losses through Indonesia’s export ban.

Your comments:

Although some kinds of local durian, including the local Rancamaya durian from Bogor, are truly tasty, many of them contain fruit that has too big a pip, is too moist and often tastes bitter.

The government should pay very serious attention to the thousands of local durian lovers who prefer the monthong durian from Thailand, as the fruit is big, creamy, sweet, delicious and has small pits.

Banning the top-quality monthong durian from Indonesia would be a terrible disappointment
and very unfair as well, for the Indonesian aficionados of this delectable fruit.

Indonesian durian growers would do well to improve the quality of their local product instead of clamoring for the ban of their Thai rival. You can’t prevent people from preferring quality fruit, in this case quality durian, if they can afford it.

The government should have the wisdom and good judgment to encourage and allow healthy international business competition in the business of fruit and of meat. We Indonesians suffer from too many impractical and unnecessary restrictions already.

I agree that the government has to ban imported durians to protect our local product.

The taste of local durian is more delicious than those are imported.

Samsul Bhr.

The local durian has big stones with little fruit. It is wet and some have animals inside.

The imported durians are far superior. Surely it is up to the consumer to buy the fruit that they want.
