rosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) are seeking a seven-year sentence minus detention period and a fine of Rp 250 million (US$25,900) or additional five months jail term for Sri Dartutik for allegedly attempting to bribe three judges at the Semarang Corruption Court.
“Sri Dartutik is legally and convincingly guilty for jointly committing corruption,” prosecutor Pulung Rinandoro said as
he read out the charge at the Semarang Corruption Court on Wednesday.
The defendant was charged with violating Law No. 20/2001 and Article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code.
Mitigating factors included the fact that the defendant had never been convicted and that she admitted the wrongdoing.
Sri was caught red-handed by the KPK on Aug. 17, 2012, with judge Kartini Marpaung of the Semarang Corruption Court and judge Heru Kisbandono of Pontianak Corruption Court, while allegedly paying bribes in front of the court building.
During the arrest, the KPK also seized Rp 150 million in cash.
Sri was alleged to have attempted to bribe three judges — Kartini Marpaung, Pragsono and Asmadinata, who were handling her brother M. Yaeni’s corruption case. Sri was allegedly assisted by Heru, who has been brought to justice for the same bribery case.
Of the three judges, only Kartini was caught participating in the alleged bribery, while the other two judges were not at the scene.
M. Yaeni, the (non-active) speaker of Grobogan Legislative Council, was being tried for allegedly
misusing the 2006-2008 official vehicle budgets of the regency council’s secretariat that caused Rp 1.9 billion in state losses.
The bribe that Sri allegedly offered was meant to persuade the judges to let her brother off with a light sentence of one year imprisonment.
“The gift was given to influence the judge’s sentence, which was to be a light sentence or acquittal,” Pulung said.
Responding to the charge, Sri said she would issue a defense statement during the next hearing, scheduled for Feb. 20.
She said the charge was too heavy because she did not commit bribery of her own will, but because she was told to do so by her brother.
