G

old miner PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) is allocating Rp 24.7 billion (US$2.54 million) to help repair homes unfit for habitation in West Sumbawa regency in 2013.

The commitment was sealed in a work agreement signed by the company'€™s officials, representatives from the Public Housing Ministry and the West Sumbawa administration in Jakarta on Thursday.

'€œThe aid is part of PT NNT'€™s contribution to the development of new houses as well as the renovation of homes unfit for habitation that belong to low-income families in West Sumbawa,'€ said NNT president director Martiono Hadianto in a press statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday afternoon.

Martiono said the agreement was aimed at helping the government to eradicate unsafe and unhealthy homes from West Sumbawa.

According to Martiono, the Rp 24.7 billion would be spread across eight districts in West Sumbawa. He said 3,000 of the 3,883 houses targeted in the program would each receive Rp 5 million.

In 2012, each of the 3,000 houses received financial aid worth Rp 6 million from the Public Housing Ministry for renovation work.

Martiono said the remaining funds would be used to build 883 new houses or total rehabs worth Rp 11 million each.

West Sumbawa Regent KH Zulkifli Muhadli said the regency administration had initiated the Bedah Rumah house renovation program for poor families in 2012.

In 2013, the West Sumbawa administration is allocating Rp 5 billion to the program while the Public Housing Ministry will provide another Rp 21 billion.(ebf)
