senior police officer has requested workers unions in Depok to observe International Workers Day, commonly known as May Day, in the city and not to take their masses to Jakarta. He also asked the unions not to force other workers who opted to stay in their offices on that day to join the rallies.
'We have asked our field officers to monitor the factories and spread the word on the announcement to all workers unions,' Depok Police chief Sr. Comr. Achmad Kartiko said on Monday.
He said May Day rallies would be centered on the Depok mayor's office on Jl. Margonda. Depok Police's operational desk head, Comr. Suratno, said the police would be working in conjunction with the military to
safeguard the celebrations, which will likely attract thousands of workers out of their factories across Depok. (dic)
