Unpad suspends officials for plagiarism

P

adjadjaran University (Unpad) suspended two of its officials from their daily duties at the faculty of law for alleged plagiarism.

The lecturers, who hold doctoral degrees were identified as LA and IM, are believed to have committed plagiarism when writing Cybernotary (dalam aktivitas notaris in Indonesi) (Cybernotary [in the activities of notaries in Indonesia]), which was published by Books Terrace and Library.

Unpad vice rector for human resources, Roni Kastaman, confirmed on Wednesday that the case had been referred to the university'€™s ethics commission.

'€œThe commission is currently studying the extent of plagiarism in the text,'€ he told reporters.

Punishment would match the level of violation and both officials had been relieved of their daily duties.

The case emerged when an alumni of Unpad'€™s notary master'€™s program, Helen Ryanta Nainggolan, 38, filed a report with Unpad Rector Ganjar Kurnia saying that the book was similar to her thesis.

Helen found the similarity by chance when she bought the 138 page Cybernotary in mid-April. She claims 62 pages are similar to her thesis.

'€œBoth writers were my examiners,'€ said Helen who completed her thesis in July 2011.

When examining both texts, The Jakarta Post found at least three parts of the book that look to be identical to Helen'€™s thesis; pages 13-40 of the book and pages 39-68 Helen'€™s thesis; pages 78-92 of the book and pages 85-97 of her thesis; and pages 85-97 from the book and pages 73-85 from Helen'€™s thesis.

Helen also alleges that IM send her three short messages three days after she reported the case.

Ganjar said through SMS that the university was still investigating the case and could not yet comment.

The Post could not contact the two individuals in question for confirmation as they had both been suspended.
