rior to facing India in the group A qualification round of the 2013 Sudirman Cup badminton mixed team championship, Indonesian shuttlers attended their rivals' first match to get a glimpse of their upcoming opponents.
In Sunday's match at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, India had to bow down to defending champion China 5-0.
According to Indonesia's team manager Rexy Mainaky, it was important for the national shuttlers to witness the game so that they could see and measure the strength of their opponents.
Indonesia will face India on Monday and then China the next day.
The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) head of development, Basri Yusuf, said they would make use of video recordings and statistical analysis of the players during the Sudirman Cup for improvement.
'That is really important to help coaches plan strategies, because through the video analysis we can easily see the strength and weaknesses of our opponents,' he said as quoted by the association website.
Sunday's matches saw India's men's doubles Akhsay Dewalkar/Jerry Chopra dominating with 17-10 in the first few minutes of the first round against All England champions Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan. However, the Chinese pair easily caught up and surpassed the Indians 25-23, 21-18.
The absence of Indian women's singles player Saina Nehwal, who had to pull out due to injury, affected her country's team. Substitute Sindhu PV put up a persistent performance and forced a rubber game against Chinese Olympics bronze medalist Wang Yihan.
Sindhu ruled the first game with 21-19, but she had to yield to the domination of Yihan in the last two games 16-21, 14-21.
'I performed quite well in the first game. Unfortunately I continued making unnecessary mistakes in the next two games. All in all I'm quite satisfied with the result. I fought hard in my first encounter with Yihan,' she said.
'We predicted such a result. We only have a slight chance in the women's singles event, but our players have done their best,' India's assistant coach Edwin Iriawan said, as quoted on the PBSI website.
