nofficial with the Batam administration said it would likely refuse any request to establishanother mental hospital because it did not fit the region's profile.
'Batam's climate doesn't geographically fit the profile for a mental hospital; it would need a tranquil, vast area. We have very crowded environment here,' city secretary assistant Raja Supri said on Thursday.
The former Embung Fatimah mental hospital in Batam is now completely abandoned. Since its demise discussions about whether the local administration should rebuild the facility have been bounded about.
Raja said it would be better for the administration to build more training centers given the fact that Batam was home to factories and companies.
'Mental patients could use the facility in Pekanbaru,' he said.
According to the city's funeral and social affairs agency data, four to six mental patients are sent from Batam to Riau monthly. (dic)
