T Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has resumed underground mining after a two-month stoppage following a landslide that hit the company's underground training facility near its Big Gossan mine in May.
'PTFI has been granted an official permit from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry to continue its milling and underground mining operations. PTFI is committed to maintaining safety and security in the workplace and will implement the ministry's recommendations in its operations,' said PTFI's corporate communications vice president, Daisy Primayanti, in a statement.
Separately, Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Gede Sumerta Jaya said the police had not reached a conclusion in their investigation into the landslide at PTFI's training facility. Even though mining activities have restarted, the site of the landslide remains closed while the investigation continues. PTFI halted its mining operations on May 16 due to safety concerns. The landslide claimed the lives of 28 workers, while 10 others survived the incident.
