SBY pays Rp 22.7m of income-based zakat

residentSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono paid Rp 22.7 million (US$2,212) for this year'sincome-based zakat mal, obligatory Islamic alms. Yudhoyono also paid Rp 1.3 millionfor zakat fitrah. which mustbe paid before the end of Ramadhan.
The alms were handed over at his office on Wednesday to the National Alms Agency (Baznas), which would distribute the alms to the needy.
'I have carried out my obligation as a Muslim to pay income-based zakat and zakat fitrah. I hope Baznas will be able to channel the alms to those who deserve them,' Yudhoyono said.
Individual Muslims are required to pay zakat mal, which amounts to 2.5 percent of their annual income. A Muslim family is also asked to pay zakat fitrah, equivalent to 3.5 kilograms of staple food.
Last year, Yudhoyono's income-based zakat was Rp 20.4 million and his family's zakat fitrah was Rp 1.4 million.
Baznas chairman Didin Hafiddudin said last year the organization recieved Rp 2.1 trillion, a 40 percent increase from Rp 1.73 trillion in 2011.
'I hope we can get Rp 3 trillion this year,' he said.
