he government of Guyana will offer free training to boat captains and distribute some 1,000 life jackets to people living near rivers following accidents that have claimed more than 40 lives in the past two years.
Transport Minister Robeson Benn says the life jackets will be given largely to students and teachers who live in rural jungle communities and row several miles (kilometers) each day to go to school. Pregnant women and those who are sick also are forced to row to the nearest health centers in the South American country.
The announcement late Thursday comes as opposition leaders pursue an investigation into the deadly accidents, with at least three head-on collisions reported since November in which more than 20 people died.
