ndonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI) chairman Alvon Kurnia Palma says President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed former Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar as a Constitutional Court judge to replace Achmad Sodiki.
'The presidential regulation was issued yesterday,' said Alvon in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by tempo.co.
The appointment sparked protests from the Coalition of Anti-Corruption Civil Societies that consists of several NGOs. 'We reject and question the appointment,' said Alvon.
Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) activist, Emerson Yuntho, said he had heard of Patrialis' appointment as a Constitutional Court judge last week.
'Please confirm [the information] with the government. This issue has rolled on since last week,' said Emerson.
Patrialis was dismissed as Law and Human Rights Minister at the end of 2011.
A source with tempo.co said the former minister had been promised a position that could 'heal his resentment' following the dismissal. 'It's political compensation. Patrialis was fired at that time. The position of Constitutional Court judge has been used as compensation,' said the source.
Patrialis is known to have met all administrative requirements as a Constitutional Court judge, including the requirement that he has obtained a doctoral degree. (hrl/ebf)
