ationalCounterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Insp. Gen (ret) Ansyaad Mbai said on Thursday that the agency had been involved inthe police'€™s investigation into a series of shootings of police officers, citing allegations that the perpetrators could have been from the sameterrorist cell.

'€œThere is no strong indications that this is the case at the moment, so just be patient ['€¦] terrorists are celebrating Idul Fitri too, aren'€™t they?'€ Ansyaad told journalists on the sidelines of an Idul Fitri open house with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the First Family at the State Palace.

A police officer was shot and killed by unidentified men in front of Sari Asih Hospital in Ciputat, South Tangerang, at around 5 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Adj. First Insp. Dwi Yatno, was travelling from his home in South Tangerang to Cilandak Police office in South Jakarta.

It was at least the third incident involving the shootings of police in the last month.

'€œ[Terrorists] around the world have put the police on the top of their target list. Just look at those in Iraq or Egypt. They hate the state, the government and the police because law enforcers defend the state,'€ he said.

On Sunday evening, a small bomb exploded at the Ekayana Buddhist Vihara in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, injuring at least three people. Parts of the eight-year-old temple were also damaged.

Reports said that the bomb bore the words '€œwe are responding to the screams of the Rohingya'€.

'€œThe Rohingya topic is just been an issue they are utilizing to justify their behavior. Their intention is to terrorize the public,'€ Ansyad said.(dic)
