Niger includes opposition in new unity government

N

iger's president has included opposition members in a new cabinet following a shake-up that he says was prompted by terrorist attacks earlier this year.

A statement issued late Tuesday said the new cabinet includes 37 members, up from 26. Ten ministers from the old cabinet were dismissed, but President Mahamadou Issoufou retained his prime minister and kept key ministries such as foreign affairs and defense in the hands of his loyalists. It was not immediately clear how many appointees belonged to the opposition Alliance for National Reconciliation.

In May, the West African nation was rocked by a double suicide bombing on a military camp and a uranium mine that killed 35.

Issoufou said Aug. 2 that in the wake of the bombings, citizens needed to work together under a unity government.
