hecity administration has announced its intention to host a folk party tocommemorate the 68th anniversary of Indonesia'sindependence, which falls every Aug. 17, on Sunday atthe National Monument (Monas) compound in Central Jakarta.
Jakarta Tourism and Culture Agency head Arie Budhiman said the folk party would feature Betawi art performances and various classical competitions like pinang climbing and a chip-eating race.
'The event will be held from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. We hope that people will be entertained,' he said on Thursday.
On the same day, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry will be hosting a carnival that features participants from 33 provinces across the country.
'The city administration will join the carnival, presenting ondel-ondel [Betawi giant effigies] by Sauja Jakarta. We will present various types of ondel-ondel,' Arie said.
Due to the carnival, traffic around Monas will be closed to vehicles.
The carnival will parade from Monas' northern wing - Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara - the State Palace - Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat - Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan and will end at Monas' eastern wing. (dic)
