he Pekanbaru Food and Drugs Supervision Center (BBPOM) confiscated 47,521 packages of illegal cosmetics worth around Rp 1.899 billion (US$174,000) from two distributors in Riau.
Pekanbaru BBPOM head Fanani Mahmud said his officers seized the packages, which consisted of 698 brands, in two different storehouses in the city in June and July.
Fanani said the packages were not equipped with legal documents as it was illegally distributed from China, India, Malaysia, and Thailand. 'Such illegal cosmetics usually contain toxic substances, like mercury,' he said, claiming that some of the seized products were famous brands. He, however, declined to identify the importers or the owners of the storehouses.
