ormer Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD made the surprising announcement onThursday that he would not be attending the Democratic Party's presidentialconvention.
Mahfud, who was scheduled to have an interview on Thursday, surprised reporters by spending only five minutes with the convention committee, not the usual one hour.
'After contemplating and 'communicating' with God and holding discussions with my political team, I made up my mind that I would not join the convention,' Mahfud said, as reported by Tribunnews.com, as he exited the convention secretariat office in Jakarta on Thursday.
Committee secretary Suaidi Marasabessy and committee spokesman Hinca Panjaitan said that Mahfud informed them his decision as soon as he arrived at the secretariat.
According to Mahfud, he did not think it was necessary for him to attend the convention. He said that he had questions that had not been answered regarding the rights and obligations of convention candidates and the obligations of the party after the selection of a president candidate.
