he Jakarta Transportation Agency announced on Friday that exploratory tests for the mass rapid transit (MRT) megaproject would start on Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta on Saturday.
The excavation will affect the part of the road between the Krukut River bridge and the Jl. KH Mas Mansyur overpass.
The work will result in closed lanes in the evenings and congestion around the overpass, agency head Udar Pristono said in a press statement on Friday.
Udar said construction work would last until Sept. 18, and be conducted from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day.
Excavated sections will be covered with non-slippery steel during work hours to enable motorists to drive past.
"We call on motorists to be careful around the excavation site and heed traffic rules to avoid accidents," Udar said.
In the first phase, contractors will start the underground work from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta to Blok M in South Jakarta.
The construction of the first MRT track, which will connect Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, is being funded through a ¥125 billion (US$1.27 million) soft loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
